What are bio-identical hormones?
These are hormones that are biologically identical to the hormones your body makes. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are made in the ovaries and adrenal glands in women; testosterone and estrogen come from the testes and adrenal glands in men.
These hormones have the same effect on your body as the ones you produce yourself.
It is felt by many physicians that bioidentical hormones are safer than synthetic hormones for hormone replacement.
What are hormone pellets?
Bioidentical hormone pellets are concentrated hormones, either estradiol or testosterone, pressed into a small cylinder slightly larger than a grain of rice. These pellets are placed under the skin to deliver consistent physiologic levels of hormones into the body.
Why use hormone pellets?
The pellets deliver consistent levels of hormones for three to five months in women, and four to six months in men. Studies have shown that, when compared to conventional hormone replacement, pellets are superior in the relief of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes , mood swings, poor sleep, and concentration.
Pellets have also shown to improve bone density, libido, and muscle mass.
The pellets provide a more constant level of hormones in the blood and are very convenient when compared to creams, patches, gels, and even testosterone shots for men. The pellets only need to be inserted two to four times per year, as opposed to daily or weekly use of other forms of hormone replacement therapy.
Pellets do not increase the risk of blood clots, cardiac disease, or breast cancer as can be seen with oral or synthetic hormones.
Benefits of Bio-identical hormone replacement:
Despite what you may have heard, the BENEFITS of hormone replacement outweigh the risks for almost everyone.
Bioidentical hormone replacement involves giving your body additional hormones when your natural levels are low. Estrogen is administered in the form of Estradiol, Progesterone and testosterone if you are a female, and testosterone if you are a male.
The following is a list of benefits you will experience:
• Relief of Menopausal symptoms
• Protection against osteoporosis by raising bone density
• Decreased risk of breast and uterine cancer
• Decreased risk of colon cancer
• Increased muscle mass and lower fat percentages
• Increased energy and stamina
• Improved memory
• Improved mood; less anxiety and depression
• Improved sex drive and performance
• Enhanced erectile function and ability
• Prostate protection
• Cardio protective; improves lipid profile
How are pellets inserted?
The pellets are inserted in the upper buttocks, through a small incision, after a local anesthetic has been administered to thoroughly numb the area. The procedure only takes a few minutes in the office. You will be able to resume most of your regular daily activities within a few days.
Vigorous activity should be avoided for about 48 hours in women and five to seven days in men.
What are possible complications?
Complications are rare however, this is a minor surgical procedure and an incision is made, therefore there is always the risk of pain, bleeding, and infection as well as extraction of the pellets.
There will most likely be bruising in the area.
How long to the pellets last?
After the pellets are inserted, some people will begin to feel better within a few days but, it might take up to a week or two for some people to notice a difference. The effects of the pellets last, three to five months in women, and four to six months in men.
Your blood will be drawn a few times during the first treatment in order to monitor your hormone levels. The blood levels are checked prior to insertion, again at approximately four weeks after insertion, and once more prior to the second insertion. This will ensure that hormone levels don’t get too high and will help determine YOUR correct dosage.
Are there side effects from hormone pellet insertion?
Some people might experience mild transient side effects with estrogen replacement, such as:
• Breast tenderness
• Water weight gain
• Women with a uterus might experience vaginal bleeding
Women with a uterus must also be on progesterone along with the estrogen. This is prescribed separately. Without the progesterone, a woman could develop endometrial (uterine lining) cancer.
Side effects from the testosterone may cause acne or increased facial/body hair growth. This is fully reversible by lowering the testosterone dosage.
