Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Scalp Rejuvenation
PRP uses blood-derived growth factors (platelet rich plasma or prp) to stimulate hair growth. The platelet rich plasma scalp treatment is a safe procedure. Platelets contain growth factors that are complex proteins that initiate and organize growing tissue. These proteins interact with present cells as well as stimulate migration of macrophages and stem cells to the treated area. PRP contains leukocytes and stem cells that are key to tissue growth and can help with angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and new cell proliferation. These platelets are treated with calcium chloride (which tricks the cells into thinking that they are in the body and the body has been injured). Growth factors are released into the liquid of the tube where the liquid is transferred into a syringe and injected into the scalp. PRP scalp injections are done along with Acell.
The blood is drawn and centrifuged to concentrate the platelets. The platelets release growth factors into the liquid of the tube. The liquid is transferred into a syringe and injected into the scalp using a tiny needle. PRP scalp injections are done along with Acell if desired. Acell is an FDA approved by-product of porcine urinary bladder tissue that has proven regenerative properties and is a cellular regeneration product used in wound healing. Acell can be combined with your PRP to allow greater PRP benefits. Acell delivers additional growth factors and sets up temporary scaffolding for tissue reconstruction imitating the surrounding tissue. Acell utilizes the body’s own tissue regeneration mechanism to strengthen the miniaturized hairs thereby thickening them.
This treatment is natural, meaning your own cells are used. Since a distillate of growth factors from your own blood (PRP) is used, there should be no side effects from the material injected. The body reacts to the treated cells as it does to a wound and immediately starts repairing the tissue. There’s actual growth of new tissue by stimulation of uni-potent stem cells, so the change is not from something foreign in the body, but from the body actually rejuvenating and growing. The hair is moved from a resting state (telogen phase) to an active growth state (anagen phase). The PRP stimulates blood flow with new blood vessels (neovascularization).
The results of this treatment includes:
-Improved hair growth/coarser hair can be seen as early as 2 months but is typically evident between 4-8 months and may continue to improve up to a year after treatment. –New hair is not expected to areas that have no current hair (bald areas).
About the Technician:
Our nurse practitioner Patty Keller FNP has been treating hair loss for several years. She not only wants to improve your current hair growth through treatment with prp (platelet rich plasma) but also offers a comprehensive evaluation to look at the deeper issues surrounding why you are losing your hair and help stop the loss so future treatments become unnecessary. There are many others providing various prp treatments but Patty uses the Harvest system that offers super-powered prp (often reserved for orthopedic procedures). Results can be seen following one or 2 treatments (see photos below) as opposed to others using less powerful prp and suggesting 5 initial treatments. Patty has several therapies she combines including diet, medications, topical therapies to list a few to optimize hair regeneration.
